Author:  Bonnie Misha Sleep, Illustrated by: Hayden James Bone.

Overview: Legertha is a hard working Leatherback Turtle mother who lays her eggs regularly on the same safe beach, in the same safe bay on the same safe part of the Great Barrier Reef every year.  Turtle mothers lay many eggs but sadly only a few hatchlings survive as they scurry to the ocean because predators pick them off one by one. They also get eaten by fish and large sea birds once they get to the ocean, so only very few survive. The other sad thing is that mothers never meet their babies, but in this story Legertha does meet her brave, fast-moving hatchling Rollo.

In this story the creatures of the safe bay on the Reef decide to take some unusual action to help Legertha and the hatchlings . It’s a wonderfully inspiring story of courage and leadership.
